Join us A State of Education with Dr. Amie Carter.
Amie R. Carter, Ed.D., took office as Sonoma County’s elected superintendent of schools on Jan. 3, 2023. A longtime Sonoma County resident, she joined the Sonoma County Office of Education after two years as assistant superintendent of education services for the Marin County Office of Education. Before that, she served as assistant superintendent of curriculum and education in the Novato Unified School District and principal at Rancho Cotate High School and Thomas Page Academy in the Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District. Dr. Carter’s priorities include making sure all Sonoma County’s students have their voices heard in the pursuit of equitable, inclusive educational access and outcomes, expanding and diversifying our teaching workforce, and securing additional funding for our schools. Dr. Carter, a mother to five daughters and grandmother of two, began her career teaching high school English and has taught language acquisition courses for English-language learners. She is the first woman to hold the office of Sonoma County superintendent in nearly 100 years and the first LGBTQ person known to have held the office.
